The 826 Withoutlet
826 National is a nationwide, nonprofit organization that tutors under-served kids ages 9 to 14 in creative writing, and was founded by American author Dave Eggers in 2002. For this project, I created my own 826 store concept for a location that would be located in the Fashion District in Downtown Los Angeles.
Because the space Eggers was using for his first writing center was zoned for retail, he opened a novelty store that sold “pirate supplies” in the front section of his writing lab, and the humorous concept attracted many to visit the store and donate to his cause. For this project, I selected an unused storefront that I found in the Fashion District to be the location for The 826 WIthoutlet, a clothing store for ghosts with a writing center in the rear of the store.. Our slogan is “Cutting Edge Fashion From Another Dimension”.

The 826 Withoutlet’s website is a unique platform where kids can post their original writing, read others’ work, and give feedback. This platform creates a virtual dialogue around creative writing and also lets students get recognition from a global audience. In addition, supporters of The 826 Withoutlet can shop all of our latest products on our mobile app.
Mission: Fashion fades, style is immortal. The 826 Withoutlet is the place where any ghost or spirit can find cutting-edge fashion and beyond. Whether you are looking for a pair of Where Are My Wellingtons, some Omitted Overalls, or an Out of Sight Tie, you will find it here. We are located in the heart of the Fashion District in Downtown Los Angeles, where invisible fashion is the only fashion that never goes out of style.
Storefront address: 1001 Towne Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90021
The retail section of the store contains clothing displays (of empty hangers), novelty items, books, and writing and imaging supplies. In the rear of the store are 3 dressing rooms, or in this case, “vanishing rooms” that transport you to the writing lab in the rear, called the “Where Am I?” Warehouse.
